Safeguarding (and) Children\u2019s Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/images\/global\/childrens_comm_logo_large.gif\" width=\"208\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>This January sees the UK <a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.gov.uk\/childrenandyoungpeople\/healthandwellbeing\/b0074766\/uncrc\">submitting its fifth periodic report<\/a> to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child\u00a0outlining the progress over the last 5 years the UK has made in meeting its obligations to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).\u00a0 The UNCRC is an excellent piece of child specific global legislation that almost all nations worldwide agree on and that our government is accountable to.\u00a0 It covers over 40 rights looking at child survival, development, wellbeing and participation and several articles specifically address child neglect and abuse: see <a href=\"http:\/\/adc.bmj.com\/content\/97\/8\/679.abstract\">here<\/a> for more detail\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previous recommendations from the last UK report in 2008 included prohibiting as a matter of priority all corporal punishment in the family and intensifying efforts to collect data on the extent of sexual exploitation.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t made much headway in the former but have made good progress in the latter as evidenced by \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/content\/publications\/content_743\">If only someone had listened<\/a>\u2019 from the Office of the Children\u2019s Commissioner,\u00a0whose very existence in England is actually directly attributable to the UNCRC.<\/p>\n<p>This report also comes just a year before 2015: the line in the sand for the Millennium Development Goals established in 2000 and discussion has been fervent \u2013 what comes beyond 2015?
