Particularly as this follows a blog on burnout.)<\/p>\n<p>The review scoured eight databases and supplemented this with contacts to seek grey literature to find out what it could on research on the epidemiology of non-erotic\u00a0self-asphyxial behaviours (SAB); it developed and applied risk of bias assessments based on established criteria for the different types of study sub-question that were being answered; it performed a sensible synthesis that drew the quantitative data together then threaded them with an intelligent thematic overview; and it writes\u00a0thoughtfully about how\u00a0this study\u00a0needs to taken on in research, policy, education and clinical practice.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/adc.bmj.com\/content\/100\/12\/1101.short\">accompanying editorial <\/a>brings this into a context for your jobbing clinician &#8211; be aware that about one third of young people know about &#8216;the choking game&#8217; and up to 1:6 will have undertaken a variant\u00a0before they are 20. That the &#8216;game&#8217; can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>And my moral uncertainty? Not any dubiousness about the research being promoted, or the conclusions drawn, just a nagging feeling that if we start to talk about this &#8211; do we make it more likely to happen?<\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; quick\u00a0scour of the systematic review literature on links between media exposure and SAB leads to a mildly reassuring nothing &#8211; but when the glance goes slightly sideways &#8211; into suicide reporting by the &#8216;regular&#8217; media and changes in rates &#8211; we get a different picture. There&#8217;s a suggestion that <a href=\"http:\/\/jech.bmj.com\/content\/66\/11\/1037.long\">reporting might increase suicide rates<\/a>, though it depends if you&#8217;re an entertainment star or not and where you live. It&#8217;s probably true that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3315075\/\">poor quality reporting (sensationalist stuff) if far worse for the population at large than &#8216;responsible&#8217;<\/a> reporting. \u00a0Looking directly at <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0077555\">young people who are at risk, those who are\u00a0self-harming or have suicidal ideation, and their use of the internet<\/a>, gets a mixed picture of some positive supporting roles alongside negative aspects.<\/p>\n<p>And from this &#8230; we get to here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>self-asphyxial behaviours (SAB) may be common<\/li>\n<li>irresponsible reporting of injury following\u00a0self-asphyxial behaviours (SAB) is likely to worsen the situation<\/li>\n<li>awareness of risk of injury is not enough to stop the behaviours<\/li>\n<li>but we&#8217;re not really sure what it &#8211; my best guess is that it will be open communication, non-judgemental support and provision of alternative activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;ve done anything wrong here.
