{"id":1119,"date":"2015-07-28T20:55:22","date_gmt":"2015-07-28T19:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/?p=1119"},"modified":"2015-07-21T14:43:49","modified_gmt":"2015-07-21T13:43:49","slug":"practical-authorship-what-to-write-instead-of-a-case-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/07\/28\/practical-authorship-what-to-write-instead-of-a-case-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Authorship:  What to write instead of a Case Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1092\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen.png\" alt=\"Quill_pen\" width=\"98\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen.png 242w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen-152x300.png 152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve spent quite a while trying to convince you that you really ought not to be writing a case report. \u00a0But you&#8217;re in a bind. \u00a0Firstly, you&#8217;ve got in mind a case report &#8211; or you&#8217;re under pressure to write a case report with (for) someone. \u00a0And also, you&#8217;ve got to get published. \u00a0So, what are you going to write instead?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Firstly, as I&#8217;ve written before, there are models for getting case reports published, and <a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/\">BMJ case reports<\/a> is a good one. If you\u2019ve done the work, have written a case report, and want to get it published as it is, then go for it. \u00a0There is nothing wrong with this. \u00a0You&#8217;ll have added to the sum of human knowledge, and you&#8217;ll have something to put in the &#8220;publications&#8221; section of your CV.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to get it into a journal, and obviously I\u2019m writing for the <a href=\"http:\/\/adc.bmj.com\/\">ADC suite<\/a> here, then you could try it as it stands. Note, however, that you\u2019ll need to have written something that is of genuine reader interest &#8211; which is to say that the readers will find something they can take back to their own practice from it.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you wanted to try something different, here are some alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>My suggestion is to start from this thought: \u00a0What was it that I got from this clinical encounter? \u00a0There must be something that has led you to think that what you&#8217;ve learned should be shared. \u00a0Here are some possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I saw a rash, or an X-ray, or an appearance that nobody has seen before<\/em>&#8220;. \u00a0Or, &#8220;<em>I saw something which people know about, but this is a really important and clear example that reminds us about this condition<\/em>&#8220;. \u00a0This falls, usually, into a case report type territory &#8211; but with images we&#8217;ve got a place for those; Mark Tighe runs the Images in Paediatrics submission in the blue ADC. \u00a0There are good examples\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adc.bmj.com\/content\/100\/6\/570.extract\">here<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/adc.bmj.com\/content\/100\/6\/599.extract\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A variation on this would be &#8220;<em>I saw a really interesting clinical situation which nicely demonstrated how to make this diagnosis.<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0Again, this might one for Mark Tighe, for Education and Practice, and the Epilogue section. \u00a0Here you describe the clinical scenario and challenge the reader to chose from a list of diagnoses. \u00a0There are examples <a href=\"http:\/\/ep.bmj.com\/content\/100\/3\/144.full\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ep.bmj.com\/content\/100\/3\/146.full\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I saw a good example of a situation which made me think about the differential<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0You could rework your case report into a Problem Solving in Clinical Practice, about which Greg Skinner has written <a href=\"http:\/\/ep.bmj.com\/content\/98\/3\/82.full\">here<\/a>.
