{"id":1107,"date":"2015-06-09T20:58:48","date_gmt":"2015-06-09T19:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/?p=1107"},"modified":"2015-05-31T20:04:41","modified_gmt":"2015-05-31T19:04:41","slug":"practical-authorship-who-is-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/06\/09\/practical-authorship-who-is-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Authorship: Who is Reading?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1092\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen-150x150.png\" alt=\"Quill_pen\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>If you write, who is reading?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Something I find strange is that people don&#8217;t draw on their own experience of reading when they begin to write. \u00a0As such, they often don\u2019t write in a way that they themselves would be drawn to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let me start here with a couple of questions. Please answer honestly.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do you read systematically? \u00a0That is, do you work through a series of subscribed journals, and read them as they are published, perhaps adding into this a couple of electronic tables of contents of other popular journals?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a pile of guilt? \u00a0A pile of guilt is the stack of unopened, or unread, journals that sits on your desk or your floor, which you avoid looking at directly because it makes you feel a little guilty that you haven\u2019t read them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Your answers?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you answered \u201cYes\u201d to question 1, you\u2019re in a very small, and rather unusual group. \u00a0I&#8217;ve met about 4 people who I genuinely believe to be in the \u201cYes\u201d group, and they\u2019re a little, well, odd. \u00a0Very good, clever, skilled, but frankly it\u2019s very hard to be normal in this group. \u00a0Incidentally &#8211; and I&#8217;ve never met him so I can\u2019t comment on his character, but if you\u2019re not looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/category\/richard-lehmans-weekly-review-of-medical-journals\/\">Richard Lehman\u2019s blog<\/a> regularly, he appears to be in the Yes group, and he\u2019s brilliant with it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you answered \u201cNo\u201d to question 2, you\u2019re also in a very small group. \u00a0Your house and office are probably very tidy. \u00a0Or you are a demon recycler. \u00a0Or both.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The rest of us can\u2019t read systematically. \u00a0We try things to fool ourselves. \u00a0We take on jobs and roles to force us to be systematic. \u00a0We sign up for emails in an attempt to fool ourselves into reading more. \u00a0But we fail, and our pile of guilt grows. This isn&#8217;t because we\u2019re lazy or feckless. \u00a0It\u2019s because life is busy, thank goodness, and fun and full of so many distractions. \u00a0I don\u2019t have time put aside in my work life to read. \u00a0I read in the heat of the moment when I need to understand something, or while I&#8217;m waiting for my computer to boot, or on the bus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This brings me to a really important point. \u00a0When you are writing, and wishing for it to be read, you are competing with the reader\u2019s leisure time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Imagine your completed article. \u00a0It is in print. \u00a0The reader has reached into their pile of guilt and taken the journal out of the wrapper. \u00a0The next stop for the journal is into the recycling bin. \u00a0Your challenge is to make your message sticky &#8211; to make them give you the 20 seconds to see what the article is about, and then the 15 minutes it will take to read the whole thing. \u00a0To increase the wrapper to recycling time. \u00a0\u00a0To write something memorable, that someone may return to in that emergency, or that they might share with a colleague. \u00a0You&#8217;ve no business being boring, unclear or obtuse. \u00a0This doesn&#8217;t mean that your article has to be fun fun fun, but it should be accessible, easy to read, and interesting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"twitter.com\/ian_wac\">@ian_wac<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You might like to skip back and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/category\/practical-authorship\/\">read the others in this series too <\/a>&#8230;<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you write, who is reading? &nbsp; Something I find strange is that people don&#8217;t draw on their own experience of reading when they begin to write. \u00a0As such, they often don\u2019t write in a way that they themselves would be drawn to. &nbsp; Let me start here with a couple of questions.
