{"id":1105,"date":"2015-06-02T20:58:50","date_gmt":"2015-06-02T19:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/?p=1105"},"modified":"2015-06-03T09:01:55","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T08:01:55","slug":"practical-authorship-what-should-you-write","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/06\/02\/practical-authorship-what-should-you-write\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Authorship:  What should you write?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1092\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/Quill_pen-150x150.png\" alt=\"Quill_pen\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>What do you want to write?<\/p>\n<p>I ended <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/05\/15\/practical-authorship-so-you-want-to-write\/\">the last blog post<\/a> with the thought that you might write about things that irritate you, or that interest you.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m someone who holds opinions. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2014\/06\/18\/whats-in-a-number\/\">I never let absence of knowledge get particularly in the way of holding an opinion,<\/a> and I\u2019m quite happy to change my mind &#8211; particularly if I can pretend that this is part of good science or healthy debate. \u00a0Unless you are completely passive you must observe things around you that you have thoughts about. \u00a0Sometimes these thoughts will be a consequence of those expressed by others, sometimes they can come on alone.<\/p>\n<p>Let me give you some of my thoughts or opinions. \u00a0Some of these will make my work colleagues will sigh long and deep to hear expressed yet again, but the point is that they\u2019re the starting point. \u00a0I\u2019m not going to join the dots for you.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t understand why we\u2019re obsessed with giving all <a href=\"http:\/\/ep.bmjjournals.com\/content\/98\/6\/209.abstract\">crying babies<\/a> a proton pump inhibitor. \u00a0I like proton pump inhibitors when I\u2019ve got bad reflux secondary to eating too much chocolate, but I also note that it makes me feel, well, odd in the tummy for the next few days. \u00a0If I were a baby, wouldn\u2019t that make me cry too?<\/p>\n<p>Why do we do tests we don\u2019t understand? \u00a0I get letters from doctors asking me about a child in whom they\u2019ve measured the ANA, and can\u2019t understand the result. \u00a0I don\u2019t understand it either. \u00a0I discuss it with my colleagues in rheumatology, and the kindest interpretation of their huffs and puffs is that even they don\u2019t understand it. Perhaps we should only do tests where we know what we\u2019ll do with the result.<\/p>\n<p>Why do parents talk to me about \u201cresearching\u201d things on the internet? \u00a0I\u2019ve got friends who do research, and as far as I can tell it involves long years in libraries or laboratories, with deep and complex thought, and scanty reward. \u00a0Does the word \u201cresearch\u201d in this context simply mean \u201cgoogle\u201d,but they\u2019re actually trying to make their activity look more sophisticated? \u00a0Or am I just being precious about medical knowledge, and claiming I have a unique insight that they lack?<\/p>\n<p>Each of these ideas could become a piece of research, some study in a library or electronic equivalent thereof, or an opinion piece. \u00a0Each of these ideas interests me, and as I write them, makes me want to understand them more &#8211; flesh them out, figure out what bits I\u2019ve got wrong, and where I might have a fresh insight.
