A: Many solutions and a roomful of conversation\u2026 (oh, and not much space left on the flipcharts!)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/pedsig.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1100 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/files\/2015\/05\/pedsig.jpg\" alt=\"pedsig\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>PEdSIG was delighted to welcome a roomful of enthusiastic delegates to the symposium \u201cLearning on the Job: Are service and training mutually exclusive?\u201d The session was opened by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobklaber\">Bob Klaber<\/a> who talked passionately about the importance of \u201creflection, commitment and permission\u201d to enable learning on the job. Following a \u201crelatively\u201d smooth (and unplanned) room swap the workshop began tackling 3 important challenges faced by trainers\/trainees on a daily basis. All participants rotated through each of the three workshops, World Caf\u00e9 style, adding iteratively to a summary provided by the facilitator from the previous group. Here are our top solutions\/ideas to take back to YOUR workplace, more can be found on our website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pedsig.co.uk\">www.pedsig.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cLearning in any environment \u2013 Challenges, opportunities and solutions\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Make the learning \u201cbite sized\u201d \u2013 don\u2019t attempt to learn everything in one afternoon\/clinic\/hour. This allows for learning to occur even in the busiest of environments as the expectation is that you don\u2019t need to \u201clearn everything\u201d about a subject all at once<br \/>\n\u2022 Signpost the learning. Help the learner to realise when learning is occurring. \u201cWe\u2019ve just seen this young person\u2026. What have you just learnt from that encounter? Let\u2019s go and look at the guidelines together\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cLearning in paediatrics \u2013 How do we keep it relevant for medical students?\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Be realistic with prior knowledge of medical students. Encourage \u201chaving a go\u201d and give \u201cpermission to get it wrong\u201d. We have all been in a situation where you know absolutely nothing about a subject and it is OK to get things wrong sometimes<br \/>\n\u2022 Don\u2019t forget the importance of the patient journey. We can all learn a lot from talking to families and children\/young people. Encourage medical students to accompany patients for scans etc. widening the number of professionals they can learn from also<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cCompetency based training and Work Place Based Assessments\/Supervised Learning Events(SLEs) \u2013 How can we make them useful?\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Trainer initiated assessments \u201cgiving permission\u201d. ASSET allows trainers to send requests to trainees when completing Supervised Learning Events.
