It&#8217;s part of\u00a0a resource which will grow, over the weeks and months for people to access if they\u2019re thinking about writing.<\/p>\n<p>This post &#8211; as others may be &#8211; is particularly aimed at people who might like to write for Education and Practice, but I hope that there will be helpful information for other parts of the ADC suite, for the rest of BMJ publishing, and beyond. \u00a0Of course, if you\u2019re looking for tips on creative writing &#8211; if you\u2019re one of these people who has always had a book in you &#8211; then this isn\u2019t the place; the best advice I\u2019ve heard about that is to read, read, read.<\/p>\n<p>In this first post, I want to ask: \u00a0Why do you want to write?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There are lots of good reasons to write. \u00a0There are some less good ones too. I\u2019ll list a few, with some thoughts about each.<\/p>\n<p>Because you want to.<\/p>\n<p>This is perhaps the best, but it isn\u2019t always necessary. \u00a0Some reluctant writers turn a beautiful phrase, and some of the strongest articles I\u2019ve published have had long and difficult gestations.<\/p>\n<p>Because everyone else is.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not particularly true in all fields of medicine now. \u00a0I\u2019ve sat on a number of consultant appointments panels where none of the applicants has a single publication. \u00a0However, in some disciplines &#8211; and in particular approaches, for example academia, then, yes, everyone else is writing.<\/p>\n<p>Because you need something to put on your CV (Resume).<\/p>\n<p>Same as above. \u00a0It\u2019s worth considering that, if you\u2019re up against three other people with identical qualifications and experience as you, and you\u2019re the one who has written something while they haven\u2019t, then you\u2019ll be a step ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Because you need the practice.<\/p>\n<p>We all need the practice. \u00a0Actually, I reckon that nearly all of my work is about communication, and the discipline of being able to write &#8211; and having practiced hard at that &#8211; has improved my communication skills.<\/p>\n<p>Because you want to learn something.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an old adage which goes \u201cSee one, do one, teach one\u201d. \u00a0It\u2019s overused, and is certainly a gross oversimplification (cardiac surgery anyone?). \u00a0However, the kernel of truth is that that you don\u2019t really understand something until you\u2019ve tried to explain it to someone else. \u00a0Often this will be to students, or to colleagues, other times it will be to patients or their families. \u00a0In writing you need to be both the voice and the ear &#8211; and the discipline of hearing (or writing) and realising that you haven\u2019t understood or explained it clearly enough is very powerful.<\/p>\n<p>Because you have something to say.<\/p>\n<p>Do colleagues do something that frustrates you? \u00a0Is there an aspect of practice that you think is sloppy and should be improved? \u00a0Is there something that you know, that has improved your life and the way that you do medicine, that other people need to know? \u00a0Perhaps you need to write it.<\/p>\n<p>More of that in the next post\u2026<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a another part of the series about writing.
