Why bother with systematic reviews?\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2014\/09\/07\/basics-why-bother-with-systematic-reviews\/\">systematic review<\/a> techniques (evidenced in the recent <a title=\"StatsMiniBlog: I-squared\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/04\/07\/statsminiblog-i-squared\/\">I-squared blog<\/a> ). The process of qualitative synthesis uses many of those familiar methods \u2013 defining a clear question, systematic literature searching, selecting appropriate research and assessing the risk of bias. Following this, however, qualitative syntheses begin to look really quite different \u2013 mostly because there are no nice numbers to add up and give \u2018the answer\u2019 but also because they are just not written in language we understand (read the <a title=\"More than numbers\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/02\/13\/more-than-numbers\/\">qualitative research blog series <\/a>to help with this)!<\/p>\n<p>So how on earth do we go about reading a qualitative synthesis and deciding whether its any good?<\/p>\n<p>Well, instead of reinventing the wheel, we can just modify our <a title=\"FAST appraisals\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2010\/03\/07\/fast-appraisals\/\">FAST <\/a>assessment:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>F \u2013 Find all the studies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As for a quantitative review \u2013 check they got everything you think might be relevant.<br \/>\n<strong>A \u2013 Appraise them right? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Again \u2013 did they look at the <a title=\"More than numbers: Assessing quality in qualitative research\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/03\/24\/more-than-numbers-assessing-quality-in-qualitative-research\/\">quality of the work<\/a> they found and discuss how this might have impacted on their results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>S \u2013 Synthesis. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Did they clearly describe what they\u2019ve done with the data they found? How did they pull the work together? Is there a clear path from the original papers to the overall conclusions? Do they give you quotes and examples to let you decide for yourself whether they did it right? Are they up-front about the <a title=\"More than numbers: Reflexivity\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/adc\/2015\/03\/13\/more-than-numbers-reflexivity\/\">influence of their own experiences and perceptions<\/a> on the work?<\/p>\n<p><strong>T- Take home messages. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How does this research change you? Does it further your theoretical understanding of a concept or issue in your practice? Do you now think differently about the patients you meet or the services you work in?
