My mother is now 73, diagnosed with ALS two years ago. She has been physically active and quite fit most of her life. Lots of cycling, gardening, dog walking, swimming, aerobics and very (hyper?) active holidays 4 to 5 times a year where she was frequently pushed to her limits by my even stronger, fitter dad. She used to complain of sore knees and muscle pains etc. and him not slowing down sufficiently when cycling or walking in mountainous terrain for her to comfortably keep up.
Would say she fits the 'athletic' bill perfectly.
