Very interesting. I'm a 35 year old male GP and I am aware that the main source from which I have learned anything about the practicalities of menstruation seems to be female comedians!

Well done, Frances Dixon on medical education about menstruation. I give you a standing ovation for your insight and fearlessness.

It's unthinkable that male doctors have so little knowledge and understanding about menstruation, and that the public at large still treat it as a taboo. Yet here we are, 2010, and if anything, we seem to have gone backwards in the past two or three decades.

I get very miffed at rarely hearing anything positive about menstruation.

None of us would be alive without menstruation. How basic can we get? Why not talk about how we experience periods in front of 300 med students? You might find women like me, who've enjoyed their periods. (It's 10 years since I had one. I loved giving birth and enjoyed menopause.)

For everyone's sake -- bring periods out of the proverbial closet at last.
