Why are the government and the press (well that's understandable - anything for a good story?) persisting in "talking up" swine flu and sending the nation into a state of panic as a result? Latest quotes from the Guardian reporting from Whitehall talk about the country being "paralyzed by swine flu" and recommendations that people be allowed 2 weeks off work without a certificate? What nonsense - for a mild illness lasting under 7 days in the majority of people - that's going to cause the precise "paralysis" that they are afraid of.
Why instead can't the authorities play it down and encourage people to react just as they would to normal seasonal flu, but it's in the summer - instead of wasting vast amounts of precious NHS resources on endless swine flu updates (the amount of paper I've
shredded this week related to swineflu in our surgery is unbelievable) and unnecessary use of Tamiflu (which then causes side effects).
