2016 cover competition: Prize announcement and last preliminary round, vote now!

13 Mar, 17 | by BJSM

Here’s the final preliminary round for the best BJSM cover of 2016. After this we move on to the sudden death grand final.

We have some exciting new prize announcements. All ‘top-shelf’ books to add to your #sportsmed knowledge, and the utility of your professional text collection.

Brukner and Khan’s Clinical Sports Medicine, 5th Edition, 2017

Grieve’s Modern Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, 4th edition, 2015.

The IOC Manual of Sports Injuries: An Illustrated Guide to the Management of Injuries in Physical Activity, Edited by Roald Bahr, 2012.

In the final round we will explain how you enter to win one of three of these masterclass books (you get to choose which one!). For now, please vote to move one of these covers into the final (polls close in one week):

December 50 – 24: 5th ECOSEP Congress and F-MARK Update Dubai-UAE 25-26 November 2017

Competing interest: Karim Khan, editor in chief of BJSM is an author of one of the prize books and receives royalties on sales. BJSM is open to donations of books in the field and arms’ length editors decide whether the book is appropriate as a BJSM prize or not. The prize for this competition has been donated (i.e. the prize is not billed to the BJSM). BJSM has a history of promoting leading texts in this manner since 2002. Please email @info.bjsm@bmj.com [confidential] if you feel the inclusion of Brukner & Khan’s book in this competition is inappropriate.

Announcement of winners from the 2015 BJSM Cover Competition prize draw

22 Mar, 16 | by BJSM

Congrats to David Minihane and Christa Le – our two winners in the 2015 BJSM Cover Competition Voter Prize Draw. David Minihane chose Brukner & Khan’s Clinical Sports Medicine, and Christina won free entry to the 2016 Return to Play, Football Medicine Conference (@FootballMed). Let’s learn about our winners:

Dave blog winnerDavid Minihane

David is in his final year of physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He completed a student placement with Preston North End Football Club in England during pre-season last July. He hopes to start a career in sports medicine after this year’s final exams.

“I am delighted to have won Brukner and Khan’s Clinical Sports Medicine, as when the book was available in the university libraries during my undergraduate studies, I always used it as a reference. But to now own the book, it will be a great asset to have in kick-starting my sports medicine career.”

David is a fan of all of BJSM’s social media platforms: blog, twitter, podcasts – he finds that it’s a great way to keep up to date on the latest research. He comments,

“The BJSM podcasts are particularly great, as I regularly tune in when I’m commuting to class, and can hear clinical assessment and treatment tips by some of the biggest names in sports medicine. My biggest passion is for soccer. I’m the current club captain of Trinity College soccer team, and am the recipient of a sport scholarship at my university. I’ve represented the Irish Universities on three occasions, and in the future, I hope to work in professional soccer in the UK.”

Way to go David, we wish you all the best as you transition from student to SEM professional!

Christina cover winnerChristina Le, PT

Christina currently works as a physiotherapist at the Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic in Edmonton, Canada, which specializes in treatment and research of various sport injuries. She is also the physical therapist for Edmonton’s professional soccer team, Edmonton FC. She is also an athlete. Christina was inspired to become a physical therapist after she sprained her ankle playing soccer. When asked what she thought about winning the Free Football Medicine Conference registration she replied,

“I am incredibly excited to have the chance to fly across the Atlantic to attend the Football Medicine Conference! There is a brilliant list of speakers that I would love to listen to and learn from!”

Usually too busy to read all the research papers that she’s bookmarked on her computer, Christina finds the BJSM blog great for the perfect sized recap on relevant sport medicine topics.

As an avid traveller, we wish Christina safe travels as she makes her way to London to attend the Football Medicine Conference on April 9-11, 2016.

Congrats to ECOSEP, MuscleTech Network, and FC Barcelona – the 2015 cover competition winners!

12 Feb, 16 | by BJSM

December 49(24)Congratulations to all of the collaborators and supporters of the ECOSEP/FC Barcelona, December 2015 BJSM issue (#24) for winning the 2015 cover competition by a landslide (honorable runner up goes to Sports Physiotherapy New Zealand 49(issue #14) Strong debut performance!).

We had the pleasure of sharing the news with two of the major contributors: Nikos Malliaropoylos (founding member of ECOSEP), and Gil Rodas (FC Barcelona Doctor):

BJSM: Congratulations! How do you feel about winning “BJSM best cover” for 2015?

We are really impressed with this award. It’s a great example of team work between ECOSEP -MuscleTech -FC Barcelona and BJSM – a genuine collaboration between the scientific community and a football club. The front cover was the tip of the iceberg: a great global sport & exercise medicine event, in the biggest football stadium in Europe (capacity of 99,354 seats that hosted more than 400 international delegates). The stadium was a real feature of the conference of course as the podium was on the hallowed turf and our listners sat in the stadium seats. The big screen hosted the shots! Winning the Best Cover rewarded all our efforts to make this venture successful for the attendees.

BJSM: What in this 24th issue of 2015, stands out for you as exemplary work?

Not easy to answer this as there are so many good articles in this issue – which is usual for the BJSM now. The Exercise-induced leg pain in sport editorial is a very good update regarding this issue in sports. Exercise for osteoarthritis of the knee: a Cochrane systematic review and MRI, does not add value over and above patient history and clinical examination in predicting time to return to sport after acute hamstring injuries: A prospective cohort of 180 male athletes, are papers that can really affect practice and benefit patients who attend physiotherapists, doctors and other sports clinicians.

BJSM: In your opinion, where do we head from here?

FC Barcelona knows that a winning team always carries on maintaining the cornerstone partners. Muscle Tech and ECOSEP with BJSM support can add more value to Sports and Exercise Medicine both in Europe and globally. We are dedicated to this exciting field so let’s spread the word of the great evidence we have now and please look out for our conference in Barcelona, October 2016!

BJSM: Thanks Nikos and Gil!

We will select and contact our 2 individual prize winners within the next two weeks. Stay tuned.

20 Dec, 15 | by BJSM

As 2015 closes, the BJSM thanks the 23 member societies we serve as a major communication channel. Thanks to the society issue editors who put together what we (humbly, and without bias) feel is the best 24 issues of BJSM in the 49 volume history. Bring on our Silver Volume (#50).

  • #1 of 81 in Sports Sciences for ‘Immediacy’ – papers cited within a year of publication – you find BJSM current and that reflects of member society engagement. Thank you!

To say thanks, here are the prizes for the 2015 BJSM cover competition:
