Undernutrition and Obesity in the developing world

In populations of nearly 4000 children from Pakistan, the dual burdens of significant numbers of children who are undernourished and stunted, and others who are obese are noted. Here.

In a follow up study of persistence of antibodies following vaccination, a third of 73 children had poor understanding of the reason for venepuncture in the study following consent. Here.

Sudden Infant Death

Reviewing 508 sudden infant deaths in Canada, of which 409 were unexplained, 10 unexplained deaths occured while the infant was in a sitting device like a car seat, out of a total of 17 deaths in a sitting device. Here.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, now apparently known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type I, was found in eight children from a tertiary metabolic clinic, and with features which may suggest mitochondrial disease. Here.

Pamidronate in infants

In a series of 12 infants with type III osteogenesis imperfecta two different dosing regimes of pamidronate resulted in increased lumbar spine bone acquisition. Here.

SLE

In a series of 19 patients with very severe SLE the use of rituximab, an agent which depletes B cells, was helpful in controlling symptoms. Here.

Regional Effects of Obesity

Using the Millenium Cohort Study data of 13,194 children at 3 years, 23% were overweight or obese, and regional levels of overweight were independent of individual risk factors. Here.

Maternal smoking

Maternal smoking reduces the levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in infants. Here.

Chronic fatigue

Of 178 children presenting to a tertiary chronic fatigue service in Bath, 32 were under twelve years old, with a disability pattern in this younger group the same as seen in the older group. Here.

Short Report

Collection of urine

A vibrating device, used by people with continence problems secondary to neurogenic bladders, was unfortunately no better than control in getting infants to pass urine for analysis as part of a sepsis work up in an RCT. Here.
