Weight gain in pizotifen

In a case notes review of 121 patients receiving pizotifen, children had a greater weight gain than would be expected but this could not be correlated with the specific dose given, or with the response of the patient to therapy.  Here.

I found this interesting for a couple of reasons:

  • I always warn patients of weight gain prior to starting pizotifen, and make the assumption that this means that no teenage girl (and few teenage boys) will persist with therapy
  • I had a child with growth faltering a few years back to whom I found that the grandparents were supplying pizotifen from  Pakistan, where they were able, apparently, to get it as an appetite stimulant…
